Port of Marghera, Europe’s Largest Cement Terminal

TRIESTE – In the near future, a new and major terminal for cement unloading will take shape at the Port of Marghera. It will be the largest in Europe, and the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority has just convened a Services Conference for the construction of the new infrastructure in the South Industrial Canal.

Formally, the public documentation refers to a “Project for a logistics–industrial facility for the storage of powdered cement in metal silos in the Port of Marghera area.” The project will be carried out by the Padua-based company General Sistem, specialized in the distribution of ready-mixed concrete and operating with several batching plants and about seventy employees in the provinces of Padua, Verona, Rovigo, and Mantua.

Mauro Barbetta, head of the company, revealed project details to SHIPPING ITALY, emphasizing first and foremost its continental record in storage capacity: “In northern France, there is a terminal with a storage capacity of 25,000 tons, while ours will reach 50,000 tons. We have already purchased the greenfield site (former Mantovani area), the investment amounts to around €15 million, and construction will be completed over the next two years.”

Barbetta further added: “We promoted the creation of this new terminal for the unloading of various product types because we believe the future lies in cement importation; in our case, it will arrive from different parts of the world.” In 2021, General Sistem will handle around 250,000 tons of cement, but “our forecast is to distribute about 500,000 tons of cement annually starting from 2024.” Hence the decision to build a new dedicated port terminal equipped with state-of-the-art unloading machinery, “including a bagging plant.”
