Proposal for a New Cement Terminal in Marghera

The Port Authority of Venice has just convened a decisive Services Conference concerning the construction of a new cement terminal in the South Industrial Canal.

The related decree has just been published, but the authority, chaired by Fulvio Lino Di Blasio, has not released further details on the “Project for a logistics–industrial facility for the storage of powdered cement in metal silos in the Port of Marghera area,” drawn up by the Padua-based company General Sistem, specialized in ready-mixed concrete production and operating with several batching plants and around seventy employees in the provinces of Padua, Verona, Rovigo, and Mantua.

It is therefore impossible to know what investment, employment, and handling prospects the applicant has submitted to the Port Authority, nor the exact location of the project, or whether the areas of interest for General Sistem are public or private. What appears certain, however, is that with regard to the maritime section of the project — as explained in the decree convening the conference — “the technical and state concession authorization process has already begun for the part of the project that includes the quay facing the South Industrial Canal.” Which quay exactly, among those overlooking the canal, is not clear.

General Sistem has grown exponentially in recent years despite the construction sector crisis, increasing its turnover from €11.2 million in 2014 to €26.9 million in 2020. Ownership and management are headed by Mauro Barbetta, a Padua-based entrepreneur with longstanding experience in the sector.
